What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Advanced lecture: Software developer tools for legal evaluations, OSADL

3:30pm to 4:00pm CET:

Discussion and possibility to ask questions

Description COOL January 2025 edition:

A major challenge of Open Source license compliance is the interdisciplinary nature of the topic on the intersection of law and technology. It requires software developers to learn about the details of copyright law and licensing, and it requires lawyers and legal advisors to learn about the way software is created and used. While past legal COOL editions provide a lot of material to learn about copyright law for software, this COOL will be the first edition to focus on the prerequisites that lawyers, legal advisors and other decision makers need to evaluate cases and determine a course of action when it comes to Open Source compliance.

The basic lecture will focus on the basic concepts of programming: What is a programming language and are there different types? What is the difference between source code and binary code, and what does a compiler do? What are software libraries and header files, and what are the differences between static and dynamic linking? In addition, the hierarchy of a computer system from hardware via kernel, rootfilesystem, application level to Web applications, and the interactions in between will be discussed.

The advanced lecture will present some of the most important tools that software developers work with and give a practical introduction on how and when to use them. This will include the functionality of patching and the tool quilt, the concept of a version control system with the tool git and an overview of common practice for commit messages and documentation of code changes.

Recommended audience COOL January 2025 edition:

Anyone who wants to understand the technical background required to evaluate legal questions around Open Source compliance such as employees of internal legal departments and external legal advisors consulting on Open Source and licensing.
