What is COOL?
COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry
- COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
- COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
- COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
- COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
- COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
- COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL September 2024 edition:
The OSSelot curation database has been topic of several COOL editions in the past where the general concept of the project and the different ways of using the provided compliance data (Presentations and videos COOL December 2022, previous login required) as well as the curation and contribution process (Presentations and videos COOL March 2024, previous login required) have been demonstrated. Since the conception of the OSSelot project, which publicly provides curated license compliance material for frequently used software projects, not only the amount of data has increased but also the availability of tools to work with these data and integrate it into other projects. This is an important step towards automating FOSS compliance tasks and as such a key aspect for the data's practical application. One of these projects is the meta-osselot layer for integrating OSSelot curation data into OpenEmbedded and Yocto build systems.
After an introduction to the OSSelot project by Caren Kresse and a short presentation of the newly added REST API for automated access to OSSelot compliance material by Dr. Carsten Emde, Jasper Orschulko, the project's creator and maintainer, will present the genesis of meta-osselot as well as its current status and plans for the future. First in theory and in the second part in practice, he will explain and demonstrate the functionality of the tool and show how it can be used in a development project to create an SBOM, obtain available compliance data from the OSSelot database and list those components for which curated data are not yet available. Anyone who builds software for embedded systems with OpenEmbedded or Yocto can learn how to simplify and accelerate FOSS compliance tasks by automating them as far as possible without compromising their quality.

About the speaker of the COOL September 2024 edition:
- Caren Kresse, OSADL: Caren Kresse holds a Master degree in Physics. Already during her studies she used and appreciated the large amount of Open Source software and she became acquainted with all aspects of Open Source communities. In particular, she specialized on legal aspects of conveying Open Source software and has been working on various aspects of Open Source license compliance with OSADL since 2018. Among others, Caren leads the OSADL Open Source Policy project and is deeply involved in the OSADL License Obligations Checklists project. Furthermore, she maintains the OSADL Container Base Image and the project page for the OSSelot curation database where she also contributes curated compliance data. Since 2024, she also serves on the OSADL board of directors.
- Dr. Carsten Emde, OSADL: Carsten Emde has a long history of professional activities in the field of software development, system integration and training, particularly for embedded system software. Carsten is specialized on graphical user interface, robotics, real-time systems and on legal and business aspects of using Open Source software in industry. He has been managing OSADL since its foundation in 2005.
- Jasper Orschulko, iris-GmbH infrared & intelligent sensors: After acquiring his Bachelor's degree of Computer Science at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in 2019, Jasper moved to Berlin where he started working as the first DevOps Engineer at iris-GmbH infrared & intelligent sensors. Here, he has been leading most of the design and development of automation and infrastructure around the company's OpenEmbedded-based build-system.
Today, he supports the company's developers as the team-lead of a four-person strong DevOps team with his expertise in building modern, scalable infrastructure and CI/CD automation, (embedded) Linux and development environments.
