What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Theoretical part: An introduction to Flutter, Karsten Herrler, basysKom GmbH

Practical part: Demo session - creating a simple Flutter HMI for an embedded Linux, Karsten Herrler, basysKom GmbH

3:30pm to 4:00pm CEST:

Discussion and possibility to ask questions

Description COOL April 2024 edition:

Flutter is an up-and-coming cross-platform UI toolkit from Google. While its initial focus was cross-platform development for mobile systems such as iOS or Android, it can nowadays also be used on various desktop operating systems, the web, and on embedded Linux systems. Flutter is an Open Source project and can be distributed under a permissive license.

The presentation of the theoretical part will introduce Flutter and its most important concepts including the Dart programming language on which it is built. It will give an overview of the Flutter ecosystem and its tooling. Further, it will outline how using it on embedded Linux differs from using it on other platforms. The lecture will conclude with a high-level comparison of Flutter with Qt/Qt Quick and with a web-based approach for developing embedded HMIs.

The demo in the practical part will show how to develop and deploy a simple example HMI for an embedded Linux system. OSADL gratefully acknowledges the participation of Karsten Herrler of basysKom GmbH who kindly offered to cover the two parts of this COOL edition.

Recommended audience COOL April 2024 edition:

Software architects, software developers, software engineers and system integrators.
