What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL October 2023 edition:

It has been standard for years to run IPCs with real-time workloads on base frequency for 24/7 to achieve lowest jitter, or highest determinism. On modern multi-core IPCs one would typically run not only a single real-time workload but for instance workloads like HMI, CV or AI in parallel. While for real-time workloads it is beneficial to run with fixed frequency other application might benefit from dynamic frequencies, like Turbo for instance. For long time it was not possible to provide the flexibility of fixed frequency and dynamic frequency on a single system. Starting with some recent processors Intel added hardware features to resolve this dilemma. This offers several new use-cases for instance to better utilize the thermal budget of the system. OSADL is pleased that Intel engineers Dr. Matthias Hahn and Markus Schweikhardt have accepted the invitation to give a talk on the principles of this novel dynamic voltage and frequency scaling with a special focus on the 11th generation Intel Core processors. But what would these theoretical remarks be without a practical showcase? OSADL, of course, immediately added an appropriately equipped computer board to the OSADL QA Farm. In the second COOL talk, the QA farm maintainers will not miss the opportunity to report on the methods used to monitor real-time behavior, clock frequency, chip temperature and power dissipation and how these data look like with the presented new processors.

About the speakers of the COOL October 2023 edition:

- Dr. Matthias Hahn, Intel Deutschland GmbH: Matthias Hahn graduated from university of Karlsruhe (now KIT) in computer science. He joined Intel in 2005. In his current role he works as Software Application Engineer within Intel’s Network and Edge Group (NEX) where he supports Real-Time related industrial automation customer projects.

- Markus Schweikhardt, Intel Deutschland GmbH: Markus Schweikhardt graduated from the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences in the Information and Communications Technology department. He has more than 18 years of experience in embedded system and software design with a special focus on audio designs and processing in automotive IVI and real-time processing in industrial automation. Markus Schweikhardt joined Intel in 2012 as an Automotive Systems Engineer. Since 2020 he works in the Intel NEX Customer Application Support & Enabling (CASE) team as a software application engineer focusing on industrial automation and in particular in Intel's real-time investments called Time Coordinated Computing (Intel TCC).

- Alexander Bähr, OSADL: Alexander Bähr is a state certified technician with a focus on control engineering. Since his youth Alexander has been enthusiastic about electronics and data processing, especially Linux and Open Source. During his further professional activity with the main focus on measurement technology and its data processing, he has successfully used the various options of Open Source software in his professional environment for many years. Since 2020 Alexander works as a technical computer scientist at the Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) eG.

- Dr. Carsten Emde, OSADL: Carsten Emde has a long history of professional activities in the field of software development, system integration and training, particularly for embedded system software. Carsten is specialized on graphical user interface, robotics, real-time systems and on legal and business aspects of using Open Source software in industry. He has been managing OSADL since its foundation in 2005.
