What is COOL?
COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry
- COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
- COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
- COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
- COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
- COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
- COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL May 2023 edition:
When in 2015 the term "Fourth Industrial Revolution" was mentioned for the first time, there were only vague ideas of what this is all about. Even some time later, when the short version "Industrie 4.0" of this term became more usual, the revolution was only at its early stage. Today, more than seven years later, we have learned that bringing live to "Industrie 4.0" primarily means to create standards, bring communities together and doing the hard work of writing software. The challenge of this software was and still is that it needs to be based on standards that can be implemented not only on large servers but also on tiny little embedded systems which at this time also were called cyber-physical systems. By some reason, "Industrie 4.0" was not yet covered in a COOL session. Since most of this software is distributed under an Open Source license, it was time to include this topic in an OSADL COOL session. The basic lecture of this COOL session will give an introduction into the concept of "Industrie 4.0" and will present typical use cases. OSADL gratefully acknowledges the contribution of Andreas Orzelski of Phoenix Contact, who is involved in the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) and, among other, overviews the development of the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). In addition to this shell, a middleware is required to connect the devices with a server. For the time being, there are two Open Source approaches available: FA3ST and BaSyx. OSADL is glad that both approaches will be covered in the advanced lectures of this COOL session. Michael Jacoby of Fraunhofer IOSB will present FA3ST, and Dr. Thomas Kuhn of Fraunhofer IESE will take the part of BaSyx. Thanks to both of them!

- Dr. Thomas Kuhn, Fraunhofer IESE: Dr. Thomas Kuhn received his PhD from the University of Kaiserslautern in 2009. Since 2008, he is working at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in Kaiserslautern, where he leads the Embedded Systems division that consists of three departments with a focus on safety, virtual engineering, and systems engineering. His research focus is the digitization of systems and systems of systems, with a focus on virtualization and the coupling of heterogeneous simulation models into digital twins. Together with his team, he develops solutions for digital twins, virtual testbeds, and safety concepts.
