What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL May 2021 edition:

It is well known that real-time systems are rather difficult to evaluate and to ensure that they always meet the requirements. This is namely due to the fact that even rarely occuring deviations from the requirement may make a real-time system unusable. If during a particular measuring interval such failures do not occur then it may not be excluded that they occur at another time. This is why real-time measurements should be undertaken under as many different conditions as possible and during relatively long time intervals. However, even when doing so, real-time behaviour can never be proven but only established with a given probability. These difficulties are the reason why OSADL is running a test center, the so-called OSADL QA Farm, to gain as much information as possible on a wide variety of embedded systems that are equippped with a PREEMPT_RT enabled Linux kernel. Among these measurements, the interference between accelerated graphics and real-time behaviour is also tested extensively. Over the last couple of years, unfortunately, it was observed that the higher the graphics performance is, the more negative influcences on real-time responsibility are observed. These observations should be taken into consideration when designing future real-time sytsems with a graphical user interface running on the same system.

This COOL technical edition will focus on the interference between running programs that use accelerated graphics and the real-time behaviour of the system. In a first theoretical approach, a short refresher session is included to provide general condition of a real-time system, how to configure and install it, how to ensure that it is, in fact, real-time and how to integrate the entire system and balance between kernel threads and user threads.

The consecutive practical session will provide and explain results from the everyday's measurements in the OSADL QA Farm with particular respect to the use of accelerated graphics chips. In addition, recommendations will be given how to appropriately configure such systems. Speakers will be Carsten Emde and Alexander Bähr, both of OSADL.

Recommended audience COOL May 2021 edition:

Software developers, software engineers, hardware engineers, system integrators, field application engineers, employees of QA departments, etc.

About the speakers of the COOL May 2021 edition:

- Carsten Emde: Carsten has a long history of professional activities in the field of software development, system integration and training, particularly for embedded system software. He is specialized on graphical user interface, robotics, real-time systems and on legal and business aspects of using Open Source software in industry. He has been managing OSADL since its foundation in 2005.

- Alexander Bähr: Alexander is a state certified technician with a focus on control engineering. Since his youth he has been enthusiastic about electronics and data processing, especially Linux and Open Source. During his further professional activity with the main focus on measurement technology and its data processing, he has successfully used the various options of Open Source software in his professional environment for many years. Now he works as a technical computer scientist at the Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) eG.
