Open Source Software in Safety Related Applications

Open source software can provide auditable and reliable code to safety system designers. The benefit of using pre existing code is accompanied by the task to produce evidence for the quality of the code. There exists several routes to gain safety certification for systems that include pre existing code. The presentation discusses the methods and means as proposed by the generic standard for programmable electronic systems, IEC 61508, and the railway sector standard EN 50128.
