Using Android for industrial and realtime systems

Pierre Ficheux, Open Wide, France

Android is one the most (free) operating system used these days as it runs on more than 72% of smartphones. One can call it a "Linux based OS" as it runs a Linux kernel but it's not another Linux distribution. There are several ways for embedded projects to use Android but it's currently a multimedia targeted OS with modified base components (kernel, libC). PREEMPT-RT and Xenomai are the most famous RT patches for GNU/Linux. We propose to adapt them to Android in order to build a "true" RT version of it.

The paper will explain the way to install and evaluate both patches with Android-x86 (4.2 Jelly Bean).

  • PREEMPT-RT benchmark with cyclictest/hackbench
  • Xenomai benchmark with latency/hackbench
  • How to use a RT application and RTDM/Xenomai driver with Android
