UIO drivers in the context of RT kernels

Hans-Jürgen Koch, Linutronix GmbH, Germany

UIO (Userspace I/O) drivers and RT kernels often meet each other, since both are frequently used in Embedded Systems. In these time critical applications, there is often uncertainty and doubt about the performance of a device driver mainly written in userspace. This talk will give you a realistic idea about what you can expect, and will show measurement results taken on real-world hardware on different architectures. It will also show some best practices for handling UIO drivers under realtime conditions.
