What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Part I: Copyright issues with training and using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Dr. Lisa Käde, JBB Rechtsanwälte

2:45pm to 3:30pm CET:

Part II: Training generative AI: Challenges of mining copyrighted works, Caren Kresse, OSADL

3:30pm to 4:00pm CET:

Discussion and possibility to ask questions

Description COOL March 2025 edition:

Even though the EU's AI Act sets sweeping rules for creating and using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in various forms, some legal aspects surrounding AI are already addressed by existing laws while a number of questions still remain open. This COOL will spotlight some of the clear and some of the open aspects and give hints what needs to be considered for different use cases.

In the first lecture, Dr. Lisa Käde, JBB, an expert on legal issues of AI, will present copyright issues with training and using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). In particular, she will discuss the questions whether training an ANN can create a work protected by copyright law and if so, whether the licensing of the training program, the untrained ANN, and the training data influences the trained ANN and the conditions under which it can be distributed.

The second lecture, presented by Caren Kresse, OSADL, will focus on the conditions for the use of training data especially for generative AI. It will lay out the ongoing discussion on the copyright law's permission to use protected works for text and data mining. In particular, it will discuss the challenges arising form the possibility for copyright holders to express an exemption to this permission and give some practical hints on how to handle this as a copyright holder and as a collector of training data.

Recommended audience COOL March 2025 edition:

Users and developers of AI for use in products, employees of internal legal departments, external legal advisors, Open Source Officers.
