What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL March 2021 edition:

In the good old days when embedded systems were used to control stand-alone machines and did not require any connectivity to the outside world, security did not play a role at all. Today, however, connectivity to neighbor systems and even to cloud-based world-wide services are state of the art, so measures must be taken to protect systems against all kind of malware. Unfortunately there is no single mechanism to provide this protection, but a variety of individual counteractions must be taken to ensure secure and safe operation of embedded systems even at remote locations. One of them is to establish a firewall for example based on the Linux Netfilter subsystem, and another one - equally important - is to provide a mechanism for field update in case a security hole was discovered and needs to be closed. This COOL edition covers both aspects and will provide the required knowledge to cope with everyday's security challenges of embedded systems.

Recommended audience COOL March 2021 edition:

Software developers, software engineers, hardware engineers, system integrators, security specialists, field application engineers, or, in other words, everyone who is responsible or may be confronted with security issues of embedded systems, etc.

About the speakers of the COOL March 2021 edition:

- Carsten Emde: Carsten has a long history of professional activities in the field of software development, system integration and training, particularly for embedded system software. He is specialized on graphical user interface, robotics, real-time systems and on legal and business aspects of using Open Source software in industry. He has been managing OSADL since its foundation in 2005.

- Jan Lübbe: After building Linux smartphones with OpenMoko and deploying Open Source GSM networks to cruise ships, Jan joined Pengutronix in 2012 as a kernel developer. Since then he helps customers understand Linux and how it can solve their problems. While not working on Linux, Jan builds wireless mesh networks at the Stratum 0 hacker space in Brunswick. Previously, he presented at ELCE 2016-2019, FOSDEM, the Linux Days in Chemnitz and the OSADL Networking Days.
