Invitation and Call for Papers

The OSADL Networking Day 2017 will take place on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in Heidelberg/Germany, and we hereby would like to cordially invite all OSADL members, associate members and academic members to participate at this event.

The main topic of this year's Networking Day will be "Security and Field Update Strategies of IoT Systems". The traditional mix between professional presentations on current topics as well as the networking and the mutual exchange of ideas among OSADL members has motivated many of you to participate in recent years. We hope that this will be the case this year as well and are looking forward to welcome many of you on May 31, 2017 in Heidelberg. Please use this registration form. If you would like to actively participate with a presentation, please refer to the call for papers and instructions below.

Rationale

The question is not whether devices will be connected to the Internet, but rather when. While there are plenty of advantages that would justify this, one does not need to look very far to see that connecting inadequately secured devices to the Internet can be dangerous. Examples can easily be found: Last year the 'Mirai-botnet' took over IP-cameras to launch DDoS attacks and more recently the network of an American university went offline after vulnerabilities in candy machines and lightbulbs had been exploited. Policy makers have expressed grave concern, and some countries are thinking about legislation to ban badly designed devices and impose fines on data leaks.

Detection, mitigation and prevention of security problems will very probably become more important in coming years. For industrial automation these challenges are bigger than for regular consumer electronics: The lifetime of the devices is typically a lot longer (up to decades), and devices could be in mission-critical places, or be installed in places that make it very difficult to do a firmware upgrade, or roll back to a previous version of software in case of a failed firmware upgrade.

Call for papers

At the OSADL Networking Day we want to explore these issues, and we are looking for speakers who want to share their experiences with us.

As in years before, you have the choice between two different presentation formats: 30-minute technical-scientific presentation on the main topic or a 10 to 15-minute short presentation on innovative products, developments and services of OSADL members.

1. 30-minute technical-scientific presentation on the main topic. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  •  Detection of security bugs
  •  Experiences with firmware upgrades in (harsh) industrial environments
  •  New approaches towards firmware upgrades and downgrades
  •  Security bug prevention (buffer overflow prevention, secure programming, etc.)
  •  Standardization of security interfaces and protocols
  •  Legal consequences of security bugs
  •  Best Practices / Certification
  •  Public relation, creating awareness of the entire issue

If you have an idea, please let us have the title, an abstract (max 1,200 characters) and a biography (max 300 characters). Please use the registration form.

Apart from this, we also plan to have some talks by invited experts. In case you have heard an interesting presentation lately focusing on the topic of security and field update strategies on IoT systems and which you think could fit in the agenda of the Networking Day, we kindly ask you to let us know so we can get into contact with the speaker and perhaps invite him or her to the event.

2. 10 to 15-minute short presentation on innovative products, developments and services of OSADL members:
In addition to the planned 30-minutes talks on the mentioned main topic, we have blocked a smaller part of the agenda of the OSADL Networking Day for short presentations on innovative products, developments and services of our members, which may be of interest for the participants. Please let us have a descriptive title using this registration form. As there is only a limited time frame available for these short presentations, we will consider short presentations on a first-come, first-served basis.

For planning purposes we would very much appreciate, if you could let us have your presentation suggestions together with the respective details not later than April 19, 2017. We are looking forward to your submissions!

The conference language of the OSADL Networking Day is English. All presentation material shall be in English too.

Our special thanks go to Armijn Hemel who is a specialist in this year's main topic and will advise and actively support us when composing the agenda. At the Networking Day he kindly agreed to take the role of the moderator.

We are looking forward to welcoming you as a speaker to the OSADL Networking Day 2017 in Heidelberg!

Evening event

Subsequent to the conference session you are cordially invited to join us for a guided stroll through the Heidelberg old town. We have every confidence that our guide will let you know one or the other anecdote about Heidelberg that probably even long-established residents don't know yet. After that, we will have dinner together in an old-town Heidelberg brewery house.

Registration deadline

For registration as participant please use the registration form available here. If you plan to submit an abstract, for planning purposes we would very much appreciate, if you could let us have your presentation suggestions and short abstracts until April 19, 2017, also using the registration form available here.
