Special Track: FLOSS for Safety Critical Systems
OSADL Safety Critical Linux Working Group
at the Embedded World Conference
Nuremberg, Germany
Thursday, March 3, 2011

Over the past years an increasing number of industries have been endorsing GNU/Linux as well as other Free/Libre Open-Source Software (FLOSS) projects for main-stream products. The overall stability, reliability and most notably security properties as well as the ease of use have contributed to this development. One area where FLOSS, notably GNU/Linux, has been in discussion without a conclusive result is the area of safety related systems.

However, it is well conceivable that FLOSS will play an increasingly important role in safety related systems as well, and this topic is already on the agenda in quite a few R&D departments. In this special track we want to give answers to

  • Where are we with concepts for FLOSS in safety related systems?
  • What is the state of FLOSS for safety related systems?
  • What are the show-stoppers - what potential mitigations?
  • In which areas and at what safety integrity can FLOSS be utilized?

Thus, we call for papers on the general topic of utilizing FLOSS for safety related systems, and invite authors to submit papers by no later than September 19, 2010 on:

  • FLOSS for safety related systems
  • Strategies for utilizing FLOSS in safety related systems
  • Safety case concepts for FLOSS
  • FLOSS Tools suitable for safety related systems
  • Assessment/Certification issues of utilizing FLOSS
  • Case-Studies in FLOSS in safety related systems

This special track will be in the context of the Embedded World Conference, to be held at the Embedded World, Nuremberg, Germany, March 1 - 3, 2011. The URL of this call for papers is https://www.osadl.org/Embedded-World-Track.
