Alessandro Macchelli was born in Bologna on the 1st of Genuary 1975. He took his Laurea Degree cum laude at the University of Bologna on the 16th of February 2000, with a sperimental master thesis, developed at L.A.R., the Laboratory of Automation and Robotics in the field of the VIDET Project (see: http://www-lar.deis.unibo.it/activities/videt/), titled Control of a Robotic Interface for the Interaction with Virtual Reality. On December 2000, he took the professional degree. On May 2000, he began his PhD (XV cycle) and so his research activity within D.E.I.S. under the supervision of prof. Claudio Melchiorri. His research activity is in the field of robotics and control in general, from both a pratical and theorical point of view. After the laurea degree, he continued to work on haptic interfaces within the VIDET Project and on real-time operating systems, in particular RTAI-Linux and QNX. With the foundamental help of some under-graduated student, he implemented some algorithms using real-time linux for the control of electrical motors and industrial manipulators, Comau SMART 3-S in particular. From a more theorical point of view, he is interested in the passive control of dynamical systems, in particular using the Port Controlled Hamiltonian System (PCHS) approach, in the control of system with delay and in the sliding-mode control of dynamical systems.

Frank Mehnert was born in 1971 in Altdöbern, 40mi south of Berlin, Germany. From 1992 to 1998 he studied Computer Science at Dresden Universtiy of Technology, Germany. His diploma thesis was about the design and implementation of a real-time SCSI subsystem for the Dresden Real-Time Operating System (DROPS). From 1998 to 1999 he worked as a research assistent at Dresden Universtiy of Technology, at the Department of Transportation Sciences. There he took part on a joint venture project with Bosch on car navigation. Since 1999 he is PhD student at Dresden University of Technology, Department of Computer Science, Operating Systems Group. My research interests are real-time, microkernels and Linux.

Frederick M. Proctor is the Group Leader of the Control Systems group at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, and an M.S. in computer science from the Johns Hopkins University. His research interests include real-time operating systems, digital control, motion control, and modeling and simulation. He also participates in standards activities for machine tools, robots, and coordinate measuring machines. He is the developer of the Enhanced Machine Controller, an open-source real-time Linux controller for machine tools and robots.

Giuseppe Lipari is Assistant professor of Computer Engineering at the Scuola Superiore S.Anna. He graduated in Computer Engineering at the University of Pisa in 1996 and received a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Scuola Superiore S.Anna in 2000. During 1999 he was a visiting student at the University of Vermont and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, working with Prof. S. Baruah and Prof. K. Jeffay on novel scheduling algorithms for Resource Reservation on Real-Time systems. His main research interests include real-time operating systems, scheduling algorithm for soft real-time systems, component-based real-time kernels for embedded systems.

Giuseppe Quaranta graduated in Aerospace Engineering in April 2000 at the Aerospace school of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, with a thesis on "Parallel algorithms for multibody codes applied to the study of complex aerospace applications". Some results of this research have been presented at the European Rotorcraft Forum of 2000 held in The Hauge, The Netherlands. In March 2001 he won a scholarship financed by Augusta S.p.A., to attend a Ph.D. at the Aerospace Department of the Politecnico di Milano regarding the coupled aerodynamic and structural dynamic simulation of rotorcraft behavior. The presented paper is the result of an assignment for the Advanced Control Systems class that I attended during my first semester at Ph.D.school.

Luca Abeni is a PhD student in computer engineering at ReTiS Lab, Scuola S. Anna, Pisa (Italy). He graduated in Computer Engineering at the University of Pisa in 1998. Luca's research is focused on making real-time techniques usable on desktop operating systems. Moreover, he is interested inreal-time and multimedia systems in general, with particular attention to OS support for QoS, resource reservations in dynamic systems, and adaptive scheduling techniques for coping with unknown or widely variable execution times. During his PhD, he worked on the HARTIK kernel (a small real-time kernel developed in ReTiS Lab) and on Linux/RK (a real-time extension to linux supporting resource reservations).

Peter Wurmsdobler has a PhD in Control Engineering from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. Previous work involved development of a bearing concept for fluid blood pumps based on magnetic suspension and development of fuzzy logic for building control. At the Centre de Transfert des Microtechniques, France, Wurmsdobler developed a real-time LINUX-based torque testing stage. Now Peter Wurmsdobler is direcxotr of Control.com's open control Lab and is in charge of the development of open control systems.

Richard Jafrate, who holds an MSEE degree from West Virginia University, worked as a lead designer of industrial automation systems for the General Electric Company form 1980 to 1988. In 1988 he joined the Mitek Corporation, a consulting firm specializing in industrial automation systems. Mr. Jafrate has designed and implemented automation systems for clients all over the world.
