Many safety-critical systems increasingly become software-intensive. A number of development standards and certification procedures have been defined to ensure the reliability of those products. Linux and open-source software (OSS) are attractive components to use in embedded systems. While some OSS reliability data is available from enterprise systems research, certifiability of OSS in a particular industry is still a major project risk. With the current certification requirements, software complexity and associated certification costs is another challenge. In this presentation, we share our experience in the development and certification of Linux-based fire safety and break-in
security systems.
