Many safety-critical systems increasingly become software-intensive. A number of development standards and certification procedures have been defined to ensure the reliability of those products. Linux and open-source software (OSS) are attractive components to use in embedded systems. While some OSS reliability data is available from enterprise systems research, certifiability of OSS in a particular industry is still a major project risk. With the current certification requirements, software complexity and associated certification costs is another challenge.
