The Reconfigurable Embedded Digital Systems (REDS) at the School of Business and Engineering in Canton of Vaud, Switzerland was founded in early 2005 to respond to the emerging and increasing market demands in the field of digital and embedded systems. The general objectives of the REDS institute, as those of all institutes, include undergraduate teaching to engineering students, postgraduate courses, technology transfer and industrial realizations, and applied research and development.
Research activities at the REDS Institute focus on the following topics:
- Embedded systems technology, from software to hardware including real-time OS, low-level programming, multicore and virtualization technology, etc.
- Design of complex digital systems including SoPC, architecture design, reconfiguration with soft processors and methodologies based on high description languages such as VHDL, Verilog, etc.
- Bio-inspired systems using fast and reconfigurable hardware to support complex calculation and data analysis
- Implementation of signal processing algorithms within FPGA and High-Speed Processors
Research projects at REDS are performed in tight collaboration with both industrial and academic partners. Projects are also done in association with other Institutes such as iAi (Institute for Industrial Automation) in the area of real-time control and MIS (eMbedded Information System) in the area of low power communication in ad-hoc networks.
The varied and intensive research activities are advantageous for the students in many respects. Student projects play a role in many research projects and the research results are integrated directly into the curriculum.
