OpenTech EDV Research GmbH

The OpenTech EDV Research GmbH, founded in 2003, is an SME located in Bullendorf, Austria. Being strongly associated with the Distributed Embedded Systems Lab of Lanzhou University (http://dslab.lzu.edu.cn), our focus is industrial research of core technology in the area of distributed embedded RTOS for safety related systems.

We have been conducting technology assessments of Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) components, feasibility studies and prototype development for industrial customers covering areas of:

  • Assessment of Real Time Enhanced Linux Variants
  • FLOSS RT-Network analysis
  • Tools evaluation
  • Prototype and proof-of-concept implementations

OpenTech's main competence is in the area of FLOSS for safety related systems (most notably GNU/Linux and related technologies). In this area we not only are involved actively in research but also have been providing training and consulting services. The potential we see in FLOSS for the safety related area has also led us to start the Safety Critical Working Group of OSADL.

Major activities of OpenTech in the safety area are:

  • Seminars on Linux for safety related systems
  • Advanced tooling (based on formal and semi-formal methods)
  • Development of safety concepts for FLOSS
  • Bridging the sometimes contradicting needs of safety and security

While the security sector has understood two decades ago that secrecy can't provide security, the safety community is yet to do this step forward - safety needs to build on public scrutinized concepts and technological foundation that have gotten the widest possible peer review - OpenTech sees it as its prime mission to advance safety related systems based on free and open-source software.
